In the 2001–2002 season, she played her first Test against South Africa in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, India. At the age of 19, on 17 August 2002, she surpassed Karen Rolton’s previous record of 209* in her third Test, and a new record of 214 against England in the second and final Test at the County Ground in Taunton, United Kingdom. She had a cool batting technique and was the kind of batsman who could take the game deep, not by playing the flashiest shots, but by standing firm and bringing stability to the batting lineup.

Mithali Raj led India to its first Women’s Cricket World Cup final in South Africa in 2005, where they lost to Australia. She guided her team to its first Test series win in England in August 2006. They successfully defended the Asia Cup without losing a single match to end the year. Mithali led her brigade in the 2017 World Cup final, where they again lost to England by 9 runs at Lord’s Cricket Ground. She was appointed captain of the Indian Test team for the one-off match against the England women’s cricket team in May 2021. She was selected to lead India in the 2022 Women’s World Cup in New Zealand in January 2022.
