Yogini Ekadashi is one of the most important Ekadashi according to the Hindu calendar. Ekadashi is often considered a holy day of partial fasting. Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha and Ekadashi of Krishna Paksha are the two Ekadashis falling in a year. Yogini Ekadashi falls in the month of Ashadha on Krishna Paksha date. Yogini Ekadashi is the eleventh day of every half month according to the Vedic lunar calendar. The second half is when the moon is waxing or rising, and the second half is when the moon is waning or waning, which is known as the dark fortnight. Yogini Ekadashi, which falls in the waning period of Krishna Paksha Tithi, is usually celebrated in June or July as per the calendar. Yogini Ekadashi comes after Nirjala Ekadashi, which falls on the Shukla Paksha tithi of Jyestha month and starts before Dev Shaymin.
Yogini Ekadashi is celebrated in the month of Ashadha i.e. during Krishna Paksha, which is the waning phase of the moon. This fast is especially important for those who are suffering from skin diseases like leprosy. If the fast and puja is performed strictly then Jyeshtha Shukla Ekadashi has deep significance in a person’s life. Like other Ekadashis, the fast also starts at sunrise and continues till sunrise the next day. The person observing the fast should not take any kind of grains or cereals like wheat, barley, or rice. It is also necessary that the follower should remain clean throughout the day and chant the mantras of Lord Vishnu. As per the fasting ritual, the devotee should stay awake during the night and pray to Lord Vishnu for good health.

Devotees or observers of Yogini Ekadashi are expected to wake up early and take a holy bath before starting the rituals of the ceremony. While conducting all the rituals, it is important to have complete dedication and devotion. Devotees must observe Yogini Ekadashi fast. Yogini Ekadashi fasting rituals begin on the eve of Dashami (tenth day). On this special day, observers are expected to eat a sattvik meal before the date of sunset. The fast will continue till the end of the Ekadashi date. No night sleep is allowed for observers. To please Lord Vishnu, he should spend his entire day reciting mantras. Doing charity on the eve of Yogini Ekadashi is considered extremely virtuous. The supervisor should help the Brahmins by donating food, clothes, and money.

King Kuber was a staunch Shiva devotee who offered flowers to the Lord every day. A Yaksha named Hem Mali used to work as a gardener. He will get Kuber’s flowers from Mansarovar every day. However, he got the flowers but he neglected to send them to Kubera because he was too busy with his beloved wife. As a result, the king sent his servant to find out the real reason for Hem’s carelessness.
When Kubera found out, he became angry and cursed Hema with fatal leprosy and forced him to divorce his wife. Hem had left the palace and was suffering greatly due to illness. After wandering in the forest for many years Hem reached the ashram of sage Markandeya and after listening to his story, he advised him to observe Yogini Ekadashi fast.
Hem Mali kept the fast enthusiastically and prayed for forgiveness from Lord Vishnu. As a result of the Lord accepting his prayers, Hem was cleansed of all his sins. He was no longer suffering and was reunited with his beloved wife.
On Yogini Ekadashi, any devotee who observes this fast and prays to Lord Vishnu with pure thoughts and feelings will get freedom from all problems and health concerns.
