Vijaya Ekadashi is an important day in Hindu religion. Vijaya Ekadashi is celebrated on Krishna Paksha Ekadashi of Phalgun month according to the Hindu calendar. There are about 24 Ekadashis in a year and each Ekadashi has its special significance, similar to Vijaya Ekadashi also. The new moon day of Krishna Paksha of Phalgun month is known as Vijaya Ekadashi. As per the name, the person who observes the fast of this Ekadashi as per the rituals, always remains victorious over his enemies and opponents. In ancient times, due to the influence of this fast, many kings and emperors had won fierce battles. The description of Vijaya Ekadashi fast is also found in the Puranas. It is said that by observing fast on Vijaya Ekadashi when a person is surrounded by enemies, victory can be achieved even in difficult situations. It is said that observing fast on Vijaya Ekadashi provides relief from suffering.
According to mythology, during the Ramayana period, when Lord Shri Ram was going to attack Lanka with his monkey army, he had a huge challenge of crossing the huge ocean. The sea was very big and crossing it was not so easy; Therefore, they could not think of any way to cross this ocean. In the end, he sought a way to attack Lanka from the sea but was unsuccessful there too. Then he asked the sages for the solution, then they said that Shri Ram should fast on Vijaya Ekadashi with his monkey army, it will benefit him.
After listening to the words of the sages, Lord Rama observed Vijay Ekadashi fast with the monkey army on the Ekadashi date of Krishna Paksha of Phalgun month and worshiped Lord Vishnu with full rituals. It is said that due to the influence of Ekadashi fast, the route to Lanka by sea was prepared. Due to the virtue of observing the Vijay Ekadashi fast, Shri Ram ji won over Ravana, and since then Vijay Ekadashi fast has had great importance. The fast of Vijay Ekadashi became famous among the common people also and people started observing this fast for the success of any of their work.
