A person fasting on this day should first observe the vow of celibacy. One should avoid the evil of others and the company of evil people. The puja method for this fast is as follows:

• One day before the fast i.e. on Dashami, one should eat only once.
• On the day of fasting, after taking a bath in the morning, one should take the resolution of fasting and worship God.
• During the fasting period, one should not eat food made from oil, other people’s food grains, honey, gram, lentils, or bronze utensils. The fasting person should eat food only once.
• Stay awake at night remembering God and break the fast the next day on Dwadashi.

Varuthini Ekadashi of Rituals

• Strict fasting is also observed on Varuthini Ekadashi. They spend days without eating anything or drinking a drop of water. The person observing the fast should eat only once on the day of Dashami, a day before. This fast continues from Ekadashi till sunrise on Dwadashi (12th day).
• On the day of Ekadashi, eating rice, gram, black gram, pulses, betel nuts, betel leaves, honey, and non-vegetarian food is strictly prohibited. On the day of Ekadashi, one should not eat food in bell metal utensils.
• On the day of Ekadashi, Vaman, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, is worshipped. Devotees arrange a special puja for this day and also follow some specific rules to make it more fruitful.
• On the day of Ekadashi, one should abstain from sleep, anger, gambling, applying oil on the body, and promoting any kind of bad feelings towards others. Sexual activities and violence should be completely avoided.
• It is a good practice to recite holy scriptures like ‘Vishnu Sahasranama’ and ‘Bhagavad Geeta’ on the day of Varuthini Ekadashi. Devotees spend their time listening and singing hymns in honor of Lord Vishnu.
• Making donations on Varuthini Ekadashi is considered very auspicious as it brings good fortune. The items that should be donated on this holy day include sesame seeds, land, elephants, and horses.

Ekadashi destroys even the biggest sins and bestows blessings akin to auspicious offerings made to the deity. Varuthini Ekadashi gives more happiness and blessings to someone than giving land, more than giving gold, more than giving food, or even donating one’s daughter in marriage. Kanyadaan is considered the biggest donation and the importance of Varuthini Ekadashi is equal to 100 Kanyadaan. Lord Krishna also said that observing the fast of Varuthini Ekadashi sincerely will lead to ‘ultimately attaining a permanent position’. Dharmaraja Yudhishthir says, O Lord! What is the name of Ekadashi of Krishna Paksha of Vaishakh month, what is its method and what is the result obtained by doing it? You tell me in detail, I salute you. Shri Krishna started saying, O Rajeshwar! The name of this Ekadashi is Varuthini. It bestows good fortune, destroys all sins, and ultimately grants salvation. Let me tell you its story.

It is a matter of ancient times. There used to be a king named Mandhata on the banks of the river Narmada. Who ruled there? He was a very generous person and also a great ascetic. Once upon a time, the king was doing penance in the forest. And during his penance, a bear came there and started chewing the king’s leg. But the king was not bothered by it. They were not afraid of the bear but remained engrossed in their penance. While doing penance he did not get angry and kept praying to Lord Vishnu.

Lord Shri Vishnu heard his prayer and immediately appeared before the king and saved the king from that bear. The bear had eaten the king’s leg. Due to this, the king was very sad and suffering. Seeing the sadness on his face, Shri Hari Vishnuji tells him Vatsa do not be sad, you go to Mathura and fast on Varuthini Ekadashi and after observing the fast, worship Lord Varaha incarnation as per the rituals.

By observing this fast your body parts will become complete. The bear that has eaten your leg is the result of your bad misdeed in your previous birth. For which you have received payment in this life. As per the orders of God, King Mandhata goes to Mathura and observes the fast of Varuthini Ekadashi with devotion. Due to this, the king becomes whole again and he attains heaven.

If an unfortunate woman observes this fast, she gets good fortune. Due to the influence of this Varuthini Ekadashi, King Mandhata attained salvation. The result of this Ekadashi is equivalent to performing penance for ten thousand years. The same result that is obtained by donating one maund of gold at the time of the solar eclipse in Kurukshetra is the same result that is obtained by fasting on this Ekadashi. By observing the fast of Varuthini Ekadashi, a person attains heaven in the next world after enjoying happiness in this world.
