Vaishakh Purnima Vrat Katha

It is the time of the Dwapur era when Mother Yashoda says to Lord Shri Krishna O Krishna, you are the sustainer of the entire world, please tell me such a law by which no woman has the fear of becoming a widow and she is fast. It results in fulfillment of the desires of all human beings. After listening to their mother, Shri Krishna ji says Mother, you have asked me a very good question. Let me tell you in detail about such fasts.

To get good luck, all women should keep fast for 32 months. This brings good luck and protects the children. Under the rule of a very famous king Chandrahasya, there was a city named Kantika, full of gems. In which a Brahmin named Dhaneshwar lived. His wife’s name was Sushila, she was very beautiful. There was no dearth of wealth and property in his house. But, the Brahmin and his wife had no children.

One day a saint comes to that city and takes alms from everyone’s house, but does not take alms from the Brahmin’s house. Now that monk does the same thing every day. He takes alms from everyone’s house in the city and goes to the banks of the river Ganga and eats food. Seeing all this the Brahmin becomes very sad and goes to the sage and asks what is the reason that you take alms from everyone’s house in the city, but not from his house.

Then the saint says that you are childless, taking alms from such a house is like the food of a fallen man. That’s why I don’t want to be a part of sin. Hearing this, Dhaneshwar becomes very sad folds his hands, and says to the sage, Munivar, please tell me some solution by which I can have a child. Then the sage asked him to worship Goddess Chandi for sixteen days.

After this, the Brahmin couple did as the sage had said. Pleased with their worship, Mother Kali appeared after sixteen days. Mother Kali blessed the Brahmin’s wife to become pregnant and asked her to light a lamp as per her power on every full moon day. In this way, keep increasing the number of lamps every full moon, until there are at least thirty-two lamps.

The Brahmin plucked raw mango fruit from the tree and gave it to his wife for worship. His wife performed the puja and as a result, she became pregnant. She used to light a lamp on every full moon as per the instructions of Mother Kali. By the grace of Mother Kali, a son was born in their house, who was named Devdas.

When Devdas grew up, he was sent to his maternal uncle in Kashi to study. An accident happened to both of them in Kashi, due to which Devdas got married fraudulently. Devdas said that she was young, but still, she was forcibly married. After some time, Kaal came to take his life, but the Brahmin couple had observed a fast on the full moon day, so Kaal could not do any harm to him. Since then it is said that by fasting on the full moon, one gets relief from troubles, and all the wishes are fulfilled.
