It is an auspicious and important day when people remember their deceased loved ones and pray for them. It is said that this is the time when ancestors are honored and thanked for their blessings. Devotees perform several rituals and offer food, drinks, and flowers in the name of their deceased loved ones. This day is also known as Tarpanam or Pitri Amavasya. Organizing these ceremonies can also provide solace to the dead souls and blessings to the living.
2024 Shravana Amavasya is extremely important. Shravana Amavasya is a Hindu festival which will be celebrated on 04 August 2024. Shravana Amavasya Vrat Tithi starts on 03 Aug 2024 at 15:54 hrs and ends on 04 Aug 2024 at 16:44 hrs.
According to Hindu mythology, the gates of heaven open on this day. As a result, the ancestors come to earth to bless their progeny. As a result, many rituals are performed by individuals. It is said that these ceremonies console the dead and benefit the living. The Shraddha or Tarpan ceremony is one of the most important rituals performed on this day.
Tarpanam is the practice of offering food, drink, and prayers to one’s ancestors to seek their blessings and forgiveness for any sin or wrongdoing. Shravan Amavasya is highly popular due to its religious and environmental significance. Hariyali Amavasya is a day celebrated to express gratitude towards trees. According to religious beliefs, on this day various sacred works including Pind Daan are performed for the salvation of one’s ancestors.
Devotees often offer sesame seeds, rice, and other culinary ingredients to their ancestors. They also perform the ceremony in the presence of a priest or an educated person. Pind Daan, or offering of Pindas, is another famous Shravana Amavasya festival. Pinda is usually a mixture of small amounts of rice and sesame seeds given to the ancestors to aid them in their spiritual journey.
This ritual is performed on the banks of rivers or other water bodies. Pinddaan is offered to the ancestors through worship or chanting mantras. Apart from these festivals, believers fast on this day and provide money and charity to the poor. Through such acts of selflessness and charity, one can receive blessings from one’s ancestors. It can also help them achieve moksha, or liberation from the cycle of life and death.
As the monsoon season begins in the month of Shravan, everything becomes lush green and the fields come alive again. During this time the organism also gets relief and happiness. As a result, Hariyali Amavasya becomes even more important from an environmental point of view. The following fasting customs are observed on this day:
According to a legend, a moneylender lived with his son and daughter-in-law. One day the moneylender’s daughter-in-law stole the sweets and said that the sweets were eaten by rats. Hearing this the rats became very angry. Those who have kept this in their mind will give happiness to the moneylender’s daughter-in-law one day. One day some guests came to the moneylender’s house, whose sleeping arrangements were made in a room. The rats placed the moneylender’s daughter-in-law’s clothes on the guests’ bed and in the morning when the servants came to clean the room, they saw the daughter-in-law’s clothes there and started whispering among themselves.
The moneylender also came to know about this and considering his daughter-in-law as characterless, he threw her out of the house. The moneylender’s daughter-in-law used to light a lamp under the Peepal tree every day, one day when the moneylender got tired and sat under the Peepal tree, the moneylender’s daughter-in-law had placed a lamp there. There is another lamp lying there. Both Deepak started talking to each other. One lamp asked the other, which house are you from? So he said that I am the lamp of the moneylender’s house in this city and the moneylender’s daughter-in-law keeps me under the Peepal tree every day.
After this, he started telling the other Deepak that the moneylender’s daughter-in-law likes sweets very much, and one day after eating the sweets he said that the sweets were eaten by rats. Hearing this, the rats got angry and placed the daughter-in-law’s clothes on the bed of the guests who came to the moneylender’s house. When this news spread throughout the city, the moneylender considered his daughter-in-law to be characterless and threw her out of the house, even though she was a very good woman. After performing the puja, he also distributed Prasad among everyone.
She worships the peepal tree even after leaving home. Earlier she used to offer Prasad 1.25 seer on Hariyali Amavasya, but now she offers Prasad 1.25 pav. After saying these things, Deepak said that whether he should live in his in-laws’ house or his maternal house; He will get the blessings of the Peepal tree everywhere. Hearing this, Sarkar came home and told the whole story to his wife. After this, he brought both the daughters-in-law respectfully to his home. Next year, when Hariyali Amavasya came, the moneylender and the entire family of the moneylender made offerings and wished everyone to perform the puja as per their wish on Shravan Amavasya.
