This king Mahishmati had 4 sons in Champavati city. The eldest son among them, Lumpak, was a very sinful person. He used to criticize Brahmins, Vaishnavas, and gods. As a result, his father exiled him. The exiled Lumpaka lived in the forest but would sneak into the kingdom at night and steal various things including food. Despite his theft, the citizens freed him because he was the king’s son. Lumpak spent his life eating raw meat and fruits regularly.

There was a banyan tree in this forest. He was revered like a god. Lumpak lived under this tree for some time. Lumpak started living like this on Ekadashi of Krishna Paksha in the month of November-December. Due to fatigue and weakness, Lumpak became unconscious a day before Ekadashi and regained consciousness in the afternoon on the day of Ekadashi.

Lumpak could not possibly kill any animal that day because he was too weak. He was suffering greatly from hunger. Ultimately he got some fruits but he offered them to Lord Vishnu and prayed for his mercy. He remained awake the entire Ekadashi night. At the same time, a voice from the sky said, O Prince, by the grace of Lord Madhusudan and with the influence of Saphala Ekadashi, you will get your kingdom and rule without any difficulty.” Return to your father and enjoy the kingdom.” By these instructions, Lumpak returned to his father and accepted the responsibility of ruling the kingdom.
