According to the story of Paush Purnima Fast, a Brahmin named Dhaneshwar and his wife Roopvati lived in the city of Cuttack. This Brahmin couple had no dearth of wealth. But still, he remained sad. The reason for this was that they were childless. One day a Yogi Maharaj came to his city. Yogi asked for donations and Dakshina from every house in that city but he did not ask for anything from Dhaneshwar’s house. Then Dhaneshwar asked the Brahmin why you did not ask anything from us. Yogi told him that we do not take donations from childless people.
Dhaneshwar felt very sad after listening to Yogi but took the blessings of Yogi ji and asked him to please suggest some solution by which we can have a child. Then the yogi asked Dhaneshwar to worship the moon on every full moon day. The Brahmin did the same after which he had a child. In this regard, Shri Krishna himself had said that as a result of fasting for 32 full moon days, Dhaneshwar got the happiness of a child. In such a situation, whoever observes this fast gets the happiness of having a child, and all his wishes are fulfilled.
Worship of the Sun God on this day has special significance. The fasting and puja vidhi of Paush Purnima is as follows:
