According to beliefs, those who have Kalsarp Dosh or any defect related to Rahu-Ketu in their horoscope, then they must worship the snake god on the day of Nag Panchami.
The festival of Nag Panchami is dedicated to the worship of nagas, and snakes. In the Mahabharata, King Janamejaya started a yagna to massacre nagas to avenge the death of his father King Parikshit. Sage Aastik intervened to save the nagas and succeeded in stopping the yagna. The day the yagna was stopped was Panchami Tithi, which is celebrated today as Nag Panchami. In Hinduism, nagas are considered highly revered. Sages, gods, and kings are often depicted with nagas.
On the day of Nag Panchami, people worship the Naag Devta in their homes, offering them milk, rice, flowers, sweets, etc. Some people also feed milk to nagas or visit naga temples. It is believed that celebrating the festival of Nag Panchami pleases Lord Shiva and the Naag Devta and grants health, prosperity, and salvation to the devotees. This festival also gives us the message to respect nature and be kind to all living beings, no matter how small or scary they are.
According to the mythological story of Nagpanchami, in ancient times, a rich man had seven sons. All seven were married. The wife of the youngest son was a learned and well-behaved woman of good character, but she had no brother. One day, the eldest daughter-in-law asked all the daughters-in-law to accompany her to bring yellow soil to plaster the house. All of them took spades and hoes and started digging the soil.
Just then a snake appeared there, which the eldest daughter-in-law started killing with a hoe. Seeing this, the younger daughter-in-law stopped her and said- ‘Don’t kill it? This poor creature is innocent.’ Hearing this, the elder daughter-in-law did not kill it, and then the snake went and sat on one side. Then the younger daughter-in-law said to her- ‘We will be back soon, you don’t go from here.’ Saying this, she went home with everyone, carrying soil, and there, being caught up in work, she forgot the promise she had made to the snake.
The next day, she remembered that incident, so she went there with everyone and saw the snake sitting at that place, she said- Namaskar snake Bhaiya! The snake said- ‘You have called me brother, so I am leaving you, otherwise I would have bitten you for telling a lie.’ She said- Brother, I have made a mistake, I ask for forgiveness for that.
Then the snake said- Well, from today you are my sister and I am your brother. Ask for whatever you want. She said- Brother! I have no one, it is good that you became my brother. After some days, the snake came to her house in the form of a human and said, ‘Send my sister.’ Everyone said that ‘he had no brother, so he said- I am his distant relative, I had gone out in childhood.’
After assuring him, the people of the house sent Choti with him. On the way, he told her ‘I am the same snake, so do not be afraid and wherever you find it difficult to walk, hold my tail.’ She did as he said and thus she reached his house. She was astonished to see the wealth and prosperity there.
One day the snake’s mother said to her- ‘I am going out, you feed your brother cold milk.’ She did not remember this and fed him hot milk, which burnt his face badly. Seeing this, the snake’s mother became very angry. But she became quiet after the snake explained. Then the snake said that the sister should now be sent to her home.
Then the snake and his father gave her a lot of gold, silver, jewels, clothes, ornaments, etc., and sent her to her home. Seeing so much wealth, the elder daughter-in-law said jealously- ‘Your brother is very rich, you should bring more wealth from him.’ When the snake heard this, he brought all the things made of gold. Seeing this, the elder daughter-in-law said- ‘The broom to sweep them should also be made of gold’. Then the snake brought a broom made of gold too.
The snake had given a wonderful necklace of diamonds and gems to the younger daughter-in-law. The queen of that country also heard its praise and she said to the king that- ‘The necklace of Seth’s younger daughter-in-law should come here.’ The king ordered the minister to bring that necklace from him and present himself soon. The minister went to Sethji and said, ‘Maharani ji will wear the necklace of the younger daughter-in-law, take it from her and give it to me’. Sethji, out of fear, brought the necklace from the younger daughter-in-law and gave it to her.
The younger daughter-in-law felt very bad about this, she remembered her snake brother and prayed to him when he came- Brother! The queen has snatched the necklace, you do something such that as long as the necklace is around her neck, it turns into a snake and when she returns it to me, it turns into diamonds and gems. The snake did the same. As soon as the queen wore the necklace, it turned into a snake. Seeing this, the queen screamed and started crying. Seeing this, the king sent a message to Sethji to send the younger daughter-in-law immediately.
Sethji got scared thinking what the king would do. He came along with the younger daughter-in-law. The king asked the younger daughter-in-law, “What magic have you done? I will punish you.” The daughter-in-law said- Rajan! Forgive my audacity, this necklace is such that it remains made of diamonds and gems around my neck and turns into a snake around someone else’s neck. Hearing this, the king gave her the necklace made of a snake and said- wear it and show me. As soon as the younger daughter-in-law wore it, it turned into diamonds and gems.
Seeing this, the king believed her words and happily gave her a lot of coins as a reward. The younger daughter-in-law returned home taking her necklace and money. Seeing her wealth, the elder daughter-in-law, out of jealousy, told her husband that the younger daughter-in-law has got money from somewhere. Hearing this, her husband called his wife and said- tell me exactly who gave you this money? Then she started remembering the snake.
Then at that very moment the snake appeared and said- if anyone doubts the conduct of my sister, I will bite him. Hearing this, the younger daughter-in-law’s husband was very happy and he honored the snake god very much. From that day onwards, the festival of Nag Panchami is celebrated and women worship the snake considering it as their brother.
