Mohini Ekadashi falls on the Ekadashi that falls during the Shukla Paksha of the Hindu month of ‘Vaishakh’. Which according to the calendar falls during the months of April-May. Mohini Ekadashi is celebrated by all Hindus as it washes away all the sins committed by a person, including those committed in previous lives. Mohini is the name given to the hidden form of Lord Vishnu, because the Lord appeared in this form on the Ekadashi date, since then this day started being celebrated as ‘Mohini Ekadashi’. It is said that the incident of churning of the ocean took place on the day of Mohini Ekadashi. When the ocean was being churned, many gems, jewelry, etc. came out of it, along with nectar and poison also came out. The poison was worn by Lord Shankar, but when the nectar came out, there was a debate among the gods and demons as to who would drink the nectar.

According to the legend, when the ocean was churned, there was chaos among the gods and demons after obtaining the nectar. For this reason, this Ekadashi was called Mohini Ekadashi. The person observing Mohini Ekadashi’s fast should follow the rituals from the previous night itself. They should wake up before sunrise, apply a paste of Til (Sesame) on the body, and bathe in pure water. Thereafter, you must install a Kalash(Pot) decorated with red cloth, and worship idols of Lord Vishnu & Shri Ram by lighting a lamp and incense sticks and offering fruits & flowers. Then, distribute ‘Prasad’ and give ‘Dakshina’ to Brahmins. Apart from this, sing bhajans and kirtans at night and sleep near the idol of God.
By observing Mohini Ekadashi fast with full devotion, one gets such good deeds or virtues, which one cannot achieve even by going on a pilgrimage or making donations. The person observing this fast gets the same amount of glory as he gets by donating one thousand cows. One who observes this revered fast gets freedom from the continuous cycle of birth and death and attains salvation. Mohini Ekadashi has great significance in Hindu mythology. There lived a rich man named Dhanpal in a beautiful city named Bhadravati. He was a philanthropist by nature. Among his five sons, the name of youngest son was Dhrishtabuddhi who used to spend his father’s money in bad deeds. One day Dhanpal, fed up with his bad habits, threw him out of the house. Now he started wandering here and there in grief day and night. One day, under the influence of some good deed, Maharishi reached Kaundilya’s ashram. Maharishi had come after taking a bath in Ganga.
Dhrishtabuddhi, suffering from the burden of grief, went to sage Kaundilya folded his hands, and said, “Sage! Have mercy on me and tell me some solution by which I can be freed from my sorrows due to the effect of virtue.’ Then Kaundilya said, fast on the famous Ekadashi known as ‘Mohini’. By this fast, the sins of many births are also destroyed. Dhrishtabuddhi observed the fast as per the method prescribed by the sage. Due to this he became sinless and assumed a divine body and went to Shri Vishnudham.
Mohini Purnima is considered one of the most important fasting days for Hindu people. The day of Mohini Ekadashi is celebrated to worship Lord Vishnu and his Mohini avatar.
