According to mythological beliefs, the Satyayuga period started in the month of Margashirsha. The full moon coming in this month is called Margashirsha Purnima. Special importance of bathing, charity, and penance has been given on this day. On the day of Margashirsha Purnima, devotees take baths in the holy rivers at places like Haridwar, Banaras, Mathura, Prayagraj, etc., and perform penance.

Margashirsha Purnima Importance

There is a mythological belief that by taking a bath with the soil of basil root in a holy river, lake, or pond on the day of Margashirsha Purnima, one gets the special blessings of Lord Vishnu. Donation made on this day gives 32 times more results than other Purnima, hence it is also called Battisi Purnima. On the occasion of Margashirsha Purnima, Lord Satyanarayan is worshiped and the story is also told. It has been said to be extremely fruitful. After the story, Lord Vishnu is pleased by giving food and donations to the poor and Brahmins as per his capacity on this day.

Margashirsha Purnima Vrat Katha

The story of Margashirsha Purnima revolves around King Mahabhish and his wife Queen Satyavati. According to mythology, Queen Satyavati was cursed due to which she was transformed into a river and remained without water for a thousand years. He performed rigorous penance and pleased Lord Vishnu, who appeared before him to break the curse. 

God Vishnu blessed him and promised that he would remain in their waters on Margashirsha Purnima because of his devotion. Devotees believe that Ganga comes to earth on this day as a result of divine intervention, thus, it is believed that taking a dip in the holy river washes away sins and leads to salvation. Margashirsha Purnima Vrat Katha emphasizes the value of faith, devotion, and the need to seek divine blessings.

Margashirsha Purnima Puja Vidhi

By fasting and worshiping on the day of Margashirsha Purnima one attains all the happiness. The puja vidhi for this fast is as follows

Worship Lord Narayana. Wake up early in the morning, take a bath in a holy river, and take a vow to fast while meditating on God.

Before starting the puja, wear white clothes and do Achamana before the purification process and then meditate on the name of God while chanting ‘Om Namoh Narayan’.

Offer flowers and perfume to God.

Set up the puja place and make the altar for havan. Perform Havan by putting oil, ghee, sugar, etc. in the fire.

After finishing the Havan, complete your fast by invoking Lord Vishnu.

Sleep near the idol of God at night.

Next day it is advised to give donations and feed food to needy Brahmins.

Remedies for Margashirsha Purnima

If you are preparing for any examination and want to ensure your success in it, then you should donate a conch shell to Shri Krishna temple on the day of Margashirsha Purnima. Apart from this, if there is no conch in the temple of your house, then install the conch in the house as per the rituals on the day of Margashirsha Purnima.

If you want to overcome every difficulty in your life, then gift new clothes to your mother, sister, or daughter on the day of Margashirsha Purnima and seek their blessings.

If you want to get rid of any kind of mental problem, then after paying obeisance to Chandradev in the evening on the day of Margashirsha Purnima, take a square piece of silver, make the Swastika symbol on it with a rolling pin, and then worship it methodically. Keep this in your mind. Install at home.

If you want to maintain love in your married life, then on the day of Margashirsha Purnima, take two clean betel leaves and write your name with Roli on one of them and your spouse’s name on the other betel leaf. Now place some rice on both those leaves and offer it to Lord Krishna while reciting the mantra. The mantra is- “Om Namo Bhagwate Rukmini Vallabhay Swaha.” While reciting the mantra in this way, offer both the pandan leaves to God and worship him and seek his blessings.
