Ekadashi falling in Shravan month, Krishna Paksha is called Kamika Ekadashi. This year this Ekadashi falls on Wednesday, 31 July 2024. Kamika Ekadashi is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. On the day of Kamika Ekadashi, devotees should worship Lord Vishnu with full enthusiasm and devotion. People wake up early and worship the Lord with basil leaves, flowers, fruits, and sesame seeds. Later Panchamrit Abhishek is also performed. On this day, there is also a tradition of praying for forgiveness for all one’s sins by lighting a lamp in front of God.
Worshiping the Tulsi plant on this day has special significance because Tulsi ji is considered to be the worshiper of Lord Vishnu. Reciting ‘Vishnu Sahastrasnam’ and chanting ‘Om Namo Narayan’ on this day is considered auspicious. On Kamika Ekadashi, Hindus also visit pilgrimage sites and take baths in various ‘tirthas’ like Ganga, Godavari, Yamuna, Krishna, and Kaveri. This day has great importance in the temples of Lord Vishnu. Special puja, Abhishek, bhajan, and aarti are performed on this day.
When Kuntiputra Dharamraj Yudhishthir asked Shri Krishna to tell him about Shravan Krishna Ekadashi. Shri Krishna said, “O Yudhishthir, I am narrating to you the story of Kamika Ekadashi which Brahmaji had narrated to Devarshi Narad.
Brahmaji told Narad Muni that the name of Krishna Ekadashi of Shravan month is Kamika, by listening to which one gets the results of Vajpayee Yagya. On this day, conch, chakra, and mace holder are obtained by worshiping Lord Vishnu with proper rituals. It is not obtained by visiting places like Ganga or Kashi and also by taking a bath in Kurukshetra and Kashi on solar and lunar eclipses. By worshiping God in the month of Shravan, Gandharva and Surya are worshiped along with the God. To get freedom from sins, one should fast on Kamika Ekadashi.

According to the story, a long time ago there lived an angry person in a village. Once upon a time, a villager fought with that angry man. Out of anger, an angry man killed an innocent village man. By the time he realized his mistake, the man had already passed away. To apologize for the crime, the angry person offered him the option of performing Shraddha rites and Shraddha feast for that person in the village. Which the people refused. The angry person was very hurt by this act, he did not understand what to do. Then he asked a sage how his sins would be removed. The sages who had become aware of his changed nature and were watching him burn in the fire of repentance. The sage understood that now he was no longer an angry person but a gentleman. The sage gave guidance to perform Kamika Ekadashi for freedom from sins. As instructed by the sage, he performed the ritual worship and slept near the idol of Shri Hari, then Lord Vishnu appeared to him in his sleep and granted him forgiveness.
