The month of Kartik has special significance in Hinduism. Naraka Chaturdashi falls just a day before Diwali. Narak Chaudas is also called Narak Chaturdashi and Kali Chaudas. In some places of India, Narak Chaudas is also known as Chhoti Diwali. On the day of Narak Chaturdashi, Yamraj is worshipped to get rid of the fear of death due to famine or an accident and for physical health.
There is a belief in taking an Abhyang bath on the day of Narak Chaudas. On this day, women apply Ubtan to enhance their beauty. Also, there is a tradition of performing Yam Tarpan and Deepdaan in the evening on this day. It is considered one of the important festivals of Hinduism. There are some interesting stories behind celebrating Narak Chaudas. It is believed that lighting lamps on this day pleases Yamraj and also relieves the fear of untimely death.
The festival of Choti Diwali is celebrated one day before Diwali. This Chhoti Diwali is known as Narak Chaturdashi. On Narak Chaturdashi, lamps are placed outside the house. This year Narak Chaturdashi is on October 30.

According to the mythological tale, Lord Krishna lived in Dwarika with his wives. One day, Devraj Indra came to Lord Krishna and said, O Krishna, the gods are suffering due to the atrocities of demon king Bhaumasur. Bhaumasur is also known as Narakasur. The cruel Bhaumasur has snatched Varun’s umbrella, Aditi’s earrings, and the gem from the gods and has become the king of the three worlds. Bhaumasur has also kidnapped the daughters of many kings and common people of the earth and put them in prison, please save these three worlds from that cruel demon.
After listening to Devraj Indra, Lord Krishna along with his wife Satyabhama rode on Garuda and reached Pragjyotashpur, where the cruel Bhaumasur lived. Lord Krishna first killed the demon named Mur along with his 6 sons with the help of his wife. On hearing the news of the killing of the demon Mur, Bhaumasur set out for the war with his army. Bhaumasur was cursed that he would be killed by a woman. Therefore, Lord Krishna made his wife Satyabhama his charioteer and at the end of the war, with the help of Satyabhama, he killed Bhaumasur. After this, Bhaumasur’s son Bhagdatta was given the boon of protection and made the king of Pragjyotish.
This day marks the end of the demon Narakasura, who terrorized heaven and earth. Lord Krishna, along with his wife Satyabhama, killed Narakasura and freed thousands of women imprisoned by the demon. It is believed that celebrating Naraka Chaturdashi eliminates negativity and evil from one’s life and brings light, prosperity, and happiness to homes.
The festival is also associated with personal purification. On this day, people wake up early take a bath, and apply Ubtan, which is believed to remove impurities from the body and soul. This bath, known as abhyanga Snan, is considered auspicious and helps keep evil spirits away.
Before worshipping Kali Chaudas, one should take a bath on Abhyang Snan i.e. Narak Chaturdashi before sunrise by applying Ubtan on the body. This is considered necessary. After bathing, wear clean clothes spread a cloth on a chawki, and place the idol or picture of Maa Kali. Then after this, worship Maa Kali as per the rituals. During this, meditate on the mother and light a lamp in front of the mother. After this, offer Kumkum, turmeric, camphor, and coconut to Maa Kalika. Meditate on Maa Kali and invoke happiness in your life.
Maa Kali is known by many names like Kalika, Kaalratri etc. According to the Puranas, Maa Kali has killed many demons and freed her devotees from their wrath.
