Jyeshtha Purnima Vrat Katha

According to the story, Goddess Savitri was born in the house of King Ashwapati. The king raised his daughter very well. When Savitri became young, the king started worrying about her marriage. King Ashwapati wanted Goddess Savitri to get a groom as per her wish. Therefore, he asked Goddess Savitri to choose the groom as per his wish. Savitri started traveling to select her groom.

One day Savitri’s eyes fell on a young man. Whose name was Satyavan. Savitri chose Satyavan as her husband in her heart. Sage Muni Narad ji came to know about Satyavan’s choice of groom. Narad ji told Savitri that her future husband would have a short life. Hearing this, Savitri said I am a Hindu woman. According to the Hindu religion, any person can choose her husband only once. Both Savitri and Satyavan married each other.

One day Satyavan was doing his work. Then he became unconscious and fell to the ground. Seeing this, Savitri came under the shade of the banyan tree and lay down in his lap. After some time, Savitri saw that Yamraj was taking away her husband’s life. She kept running behind Yamraj crying. Seeing this, Yamraj said that you can come only to the earth, not to the underworld. Hearing this, Savitri replied that Satyavan is my husband. A wife’s religion says that a wife should not leave her husband. Hearing this, Yamraj became happy and said that I cannot bring back your husband’s life. But you can ask for three boons from me. Savitri asked for the eyes of her mother-in-law and father-in-law in her first boon. In the second boon, she asked for her husband’s kingdom.

In the third boon, she asked for the boon of becoming the mother of Satyavan’s sons. Yamraj was surprised to hear this. In the third boon, Savitri cleverly got her husband’s life back. Yamraj had to return to Satyavan’s life. That is why a married woman observes this fast for the long life of her husband. Jyeshtha Purnima was falling on this day. That is why it is called Jyeshtha Purnima Vrat.
