The story associated with Dhanteras is that on the day of Kartik Krishna Trayodashi, Lord Vishnu broke one eye of the Guru of the demons, Shukracharya, for obstructing the work of the gods.
According to the story, to free the gods from the fear of King Bali, Lord Vishnu took the form of Vaman and reached the place of the Yagya of King Bali. Shukracharya recognized Lord Vishnu even in the form of Vaman and urged King Bali to refuse whatever Vaman asked for. Vaman is Lord Vishnu himself, who has come to snatch everything from you to help the gods.
Bali did not listen to Shukracharya. King Bali started taking a pledge by taking water from the kamandal to donate the three steps of land asked for by Lord Vaman. To stop Bali from donating, Shukracharya entered King Bali’s kamandal in a small form. This blocked the way for water to come out of the kamandal.
Lord Vaman understood Shukracharya’s trick. Lord Vaman placed the Kusha in his hand in the kamandal in such a way that one eye of Shukracharya burst. Shukracharya came out of the kamandal struggling.
After this, Bali took a vow to donate three steps of land. Then Lord Vaman measured the entire earth with one of his feet and the space with the second step. When there was no place for the third step, Bali placed his head at the feet of Lord Vaman. Bali lost everything in the donation.
In this way, the gods were freed from the fear of Bali, and the gods got many times more wealth than what Bali had snatched from them. Dhanteras festival is also celebrated on this occasion.
