To observe the Devshayani Ekadashi fast, preparation for this fast should be started from Dashami Tithi itself. First of all, do not include any kind of Tamasic food in the dinner on Dashami Tithi. If possible, do not use salt in food, because doing so reduces the virtue of fasting. Along with this, the consumption of barley, meat, wheat, and moong dal should also be avoided. It starts from Vratadashami Tithi and continues till the morning of Dwadashi Tithi. On both Dashami Tithi and Ekadashi Tithi, one should speak the truth and should not do anything that hurts or harms others.

Along with this, also strictly follow the general rules of fasting mentioned in the scriptures. To observe the fast on Ekadashi Tithi, wake up early in the morning, retire from daily work, and take a bath. Taking a bath in a holy place or a holy river on the day of Ekadashi has special significance. But if this is not possible then the seeker should take a bath at home on this day and if possible, pure water should be used along with mud, sesame seeds, and kasha while taking a bath. Worship Lord Vishnu after daily work and bath. For worship, the Kalash should be placed over rice and tied with a red cloth, after which the Kalash should be worshipped. This is known as Kalash Sthapana. Worship should be done by placing the idol or picture of God on the Kalash. After doing all these activities, worship should be done with incense, lamps, and flowers.

Devuthani Ekadashi of Vrat Katha

In the Suryavansh, there was a Chakravarti king named Mandhata, who was truthful and of great majesty. He was devoted to his people. All his people were full of wealth and happiness. No one had any problems in his kingdom. Once there was no rain in that kingdom for three years and there was a famine. The people became extremely sad due to the lack of food. Yajnadis also stopped in the state. Seeing this calamity, one day the king took an army with him and headed towards the forest. While visiting the ashrams of many sages, he finally reached the ashram of Rishi Angira, son of Brahma.

There the king bowed to sage Angira and said in a humble tone, O Lord! Despite following the religion in every way, there has been a famine in my kingdom. The people are extremely saddened by this. It is said in the scriptures that the people suffer because of the sins of the king. When I rule according to religion, then how did famine occur in my kingdom? I still don’t know why. Then Angira Rishi told the king to observe the fast on Padma Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha of Ashadh month. Due to the effect of fasting, there will be rain in your kingdom and the people will get happiness because fasting on this Ekadashi will give all the attainments and will destroy all the troubles. If you fast on this Ekadashi along with your subjects, servants, and ministers, you will get results.

Hearing these words of the sage, the king returned to his city and observed the Ekadashi fast as per the rituals. Due to the effect of that fast, it rained and happiness and prosperity returned to the people as before. Therefore, all human beings should fast on Ekadashi this month. This fast will give enjoyment in this world and salvation in the next world. By reading and listening to this story, all the sins of a person are destroyed.
