February 20, 2024

Devshayani Ekadashi is one of the most important Ekadashis out of the 24 Ekadashis that occur in the year. Devshayani Ekadashi falls on the 11th day of Shukla Paksha in the Hindu month of Ashadha (June–July), which is the fortnight of the waxing moon phase.

The meaning of Devshayani Ekadashi is- that ‘Dev’ means God and ‘Shayani’ means gold, hence combined it means gold of God. The name Devshayani Ekadashi is appropriate as it is believed that on this day Lord Vishnu goes to sleep in ‘Kshirsagar’ (the cosmic ocean of milk) to sleep on a bed made of his coiled Sheshnag. From the day of Devshayani Ekadashi, Supreme Lord Vishnu sleeps for 4 months, known as ‘Chaturmas’ and wakes up on Prabodhini Ekadashi/Devothani Ekadashi in the Hindu month of Kartik (October-November).

Devshayani Gyaras/Ekadashi is always followed by the famous Puri Jagannath Rath Yatra which is a carriage procession of Lord Jagannath (a form of Lord Vishnu) in Puri, Orissa (Odisha). Devotees observe the fast of Devshayani Ekadashi from sunrise of the day till sunrise of Dwadashi the next day.

Devshayani Ekadashi of Vrat Katha

There is a story related to Devshayani Ekadashi in Hindu scriptures. During Satyayuga, a great king named Mandhata ruled his kingdom and all his subjects were very happy. Once, his kingdom was affected by a severe drought and famine which lasted for about three years. The king loved his subjects very much and hence when he saw the pitiful condition of his subjects during the drought, he was deeply troubled by their troubles. Thus, to free his subjects from this endless suffering and find a proper solution to the problem, the king set out towards the forest with his soldiers. While wandering in the forest, he came across the ashram of sage Angira, who was the son of Lord Brahma. Seeing King Mandhata standing in front of him with folded hands, Sage Angira asked him the purpose of his coming.

The king fell at the feet of the saint, told him the reason for his sorrow, and asked for his help. Then sage Angira asked the king to observe a fast on Ekadashi falling in the month of Ashadha and said that if he observed that fast religiously, there would be good rains and his kingdom would again become as prosperous as before. With the blessings of the sage, King Mandhata returned to his kingdom and observed the fast of Devshayani Ekadashi as per the rituals. Soon, under the influence of his religious prayers and the grace of Lord Vishnu, there were heavy rains in his kingdom bringing greenery and prosperity everywhere. Therefore, by observing fast on this day and doing special worship of Lord Vishnu, all the wishes are fulfilled and all sins are destroyed and salvation is attained.
