The last date of Krishna Paksha of Ashwina month of the Hindu calendar i.e. Ashwina Amavasya. This is the last day of Pitru Paksha and is known as Sarva Pitru Amavasya. On this day, not only is Shraddha performed for those people who died on Amavasya Tithi, but there is also a tradition of performing Shraddha for those people whose death date is not known. During Ashwina Amavasya, the ancestors come to earth and take their part in some form or the other. At this time all the ancestors come in subtle form to the doorsteps of their descendants and take their share of food.
Whatever is served in food reaches the ancestors. Here ancestors mean all such ancestors who are no longer with us but at the time of Shraddha they join us and we express our reverence towards them by performing Shraddha to the best of our ability for the peace of their souls.

Furthermore, according to Hindu mythology, ancestors who have not found peace may curse their descendants, which may hurt their lives. By performing rituals and prayers on the day of Ashwin Amavasya, a person can overcome these curses and receive blessings from his ancestors.
Additionally, Ashwina Amavasya is also an occasion to seek forgiveness for any offenses committed against one’s ancestors. By performing rituals and prayers, one can seek forgiveness from one’s ancestors and pave the way to a peaceful life. Ashwina Amavasya marks the start of the festive season in India. This is an auspicious time to prepare for the upcoming festivals like Durga Puja, Diwali, and Navratri.

Thus, donating food, clothes, or money on this day can help in alleviating the sufferings of the departed souls and bring peace in their afterlife. Ultimately, Ashwin Amavasya is a time of spiritual renewal and introspection. Any person can find renewed purpose and direction by reflecting on their life and seeking blessings from their ancestors.
