Apara Ekadashi festival falls in May or June according to the English calendar, whereas according to the Hindu calendar, this date falls in the month of Jyestha. This Ekadashi falls during Krishna Paksha of Jyeshtha month. Apara Ekadashi has many names like Jayeshtha Krishna Ekadashi, Bhadrakali Ekadashi, or Jalkrida Ekadashi. According to Vedic astrology, Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi should be worshiped on this day. According to the Apara Ekadashi puja method, wake up early in the morning take a bath, and then wear clean clothes. Prepare the place and install the idol of Maa Lakshmi and Shri Hari. After the installation of the idol of Maa Lakshmi and Shri Hari, start your puja. Make offerings to Lord Vishnu which should include bananas, and mangoes along with some yellow flowers, yellow sandalwood, and yellow clothes. Apply saffron tilak on the idol of Shri Hari. Listen to Apara Ekadashi Vrat Katha and recite Vishnu Sahasranama. After this, complete the puja with Aarti.

The fast of Apara Ekadashi starts from ‘Dashami’ (10th day). On this day a person eats food only once so that the stomach remains empty on the day of Ekadashi. Some devotees observe a strict fast and spend the day without eating or drinking anything. A partial fast can also be observed for those who are unable to observe a strict fast. Then they can eat ‘fruits’ throughout the day. The fast starts at sunrise and ends at sunrise on Dwadashi (12th day). Eating all types of grains and rice is prohibited on the day of Apara Ekadashi. He was always wondering how to take over the kingdom. He was always looking for an opportunity to kill his brother and regain his power and kingdom. One day, getting an opportunity, he killed his brother and buried him under a Peepal tree.

Due to his untimely death, the king’s soul started wandering and started troubling every traveler passing by that tree. Coincidentally, one day a sage was passing through the same path. When he encountered that soul, he asked him the reason for not attaining salvation till now. The king’s soul told the sage the entire story of his betrayal. After this, the sage, with his power, freed the soul and taught it about life. For the salvation of the king, the sage observed the fast of Apara Ekadashi and helped him get rid of Preta Yoni. He offered the virtue gained by fasting on the day of Dwadashi to the soul of the king. Due to the effect of Apara Ekadashi’s fast, the king’s soul attained salvation and got rid of the ghost.

A story regarding Apara Ekadashi is also related to Mahabharata. According to Hindu beliefs and mythology, it is believed that the importance of this Ekadashi was told by Lord Krishna to King Yudhishthir.
