At the age of just 8, Goddess Parvati became aware of the events of her previous birth and from then on she started penance to get Lord Shiva as her husband. During her penance, Mother used to eat only roots, fruits and leaves. Later mother started meditating by drinking only air. Goddess Parvati attained immense glory through penance, hence she was named Mahagauri. Reciting the Madhyam Charitra of Durga Saptashati on this day is considered particularly fruitful.
