Chandraghanta form of Goddess Durga is worshiped on the third day of Chaitra Navratri. Nine forms of the Mother Goddess are worshiped during Navratri which lasts for nine days. Maa Chandraghanta is known for killing demons. It is believed that she removes the sorrows of her devotees, hence she has a bow, trident, sword and mace in her hands. An hourglass shaped half moon is visible on the forehead of Goddess Chandraghanta. For this reason devotees call him Chandraghanta.

According to the scriptures, in ancient times, when there was a war going on between the gods and the demons, Mahishasura was fighting on the side of the demons. At the same time, Lord Indra was fighting on behalf of the gods. Mahishasura defeated Lord Indra in this war. Mahishasura’s empire extended to the gods and he started committing atrocities. Troubled by this atrocities, the Trinity – Brahma, Vishnu and Lord Shiva also became angry. When the Trinity and all the gods used their power, Mother Bhagwati appeared. After the incarnation of Maa Bhagwati, Lord Shiva gave his trident to Maa Bhagwati. Apart from this, Lord Vishnu had given his Chakra to Mother Bhagwati. Then all the gods also gave their weapons to Mother Bhagwati. Indradev gave him the thunderbolt and the elephant Airavata, while Suryadev gave him speed, sword and a lion for riding. After this Goddess Chandraghanta killed Mahishasura.
