Chandraghanta form of Goddess Durga is worshiped on the third day of Chaitra Navratri. Nine forms of the Mother Goddess are worshiped during Navratri which lasts for nine days. According to the scriptures, in ancient times, when there was a war going on between the gods and the demons, Mahishasura was fighting on the side of the demons. Then all the gods also gave their weapons to Mother Bhagwati. Indradev gave him the thunderbolt and the elephant Airavata, while Suryadev gave him speed, sword and a lion for riding. After this Goddess Chandraghanta killed Mahishasura.
