Guru Purnima Importance

The word “Guru” originated from the ancient language, Sanskrit. It means “remover of darkness.” A guru is a ray of light in a person’s life, which dispels the dark clouds of ignorance. He allows the disciples to find the source of creation within themselves as they make the best use of their talents to achieve success in life.

Hence, this festival is traditionally celebrated to express our gratitude towards our teachers or gurus and seek their blessings as we prepare to face challenges in life. This day is also very important because it is considered an excellent time to practice yoga, meditation, or sadhana.

Furthermore, this day is dedicated to honoring Ved Vyas, one of the most revered gurus as per our scriptures. He was a learned man who composed the four Vedas of Hinduism, laid the foundation for writing several Puranas, composed the epic Mahabharata, and was a holistic encyclopedia of the deep ancient knowledge of Hinduism.

Guru Purnima Story

According to mythological beliefs, the birth anniversary of Maharishi Vedvyas is celebrated as Guru Purnima. It is said that in his childhood, Maharishi Vedvyas expressed his desire to see God to his parents, but Mother Satyavati rejected Vedvyas’ wish. Then Ved Vyas was adamant, and due to his insistence, his mother ordered him to go to the forest.

Also said that whenever you miss home, come back. After this, Ved Vyas went to the forest for penance, and after going to the forest, he performed difficult penance. As a result of this penance, Ved Vyas gained proficiency in the Sanskrit language.

After this, he expanded the four Vedas and composed the Brahma Sutra along with the Mahabharata, the eighteen Mahapuranas. Maharishi Ved Vyas knew all four Vedas. This is why the tradition of worshiping the Guru on this day has been going on for years. For this reason, Ashadh Purnima is also known as Vyas Purnima.
