The Ekadashi of Ashwin Shukla Paksha is called Papankusha Ekadashi. Although there are two Ekadashis every month, one in Shukla Paksha and the other in Krishna Paksha, but Papankusha Ekadashi has a different importance. By observing this fast, Lord Vishnu is worshipped. By observing fast on Papankusha Ekadashi, Shri Hari Vishnu is pleased and never lets the devotees suffer from a lack of wealth, happiness, and good fortune. It is believed that by observing this fast all sins are destroyed and the person attains salvation while enjoying the pleasures of this world. On this day, Lord Vishnu, the sustainer of the universe, is worshipped. The fast of Ekadashi which curbs sins is called Papankusha Ekadashi.
Ekadashi date has special importance in Sanatan Dharma, hence Ekadashi has also been given the title of Vratraj because it is the best among all the fasts. Ekadashi falling on the next day of Dussehra in Shukla Paksha of Ashwin month is called Papankusha (Ashwini Shukla)Ekadashi. By observing the fast of this Ekadashi properly, one gets freedom from all sins and gets the desired results. In Treta Yuga, brother Bharat met Lord Shri Ram ji after Dussehra on this Ekadashi day. According to the belief, the result that a person desires after doing hard penance. That result is achieved only by worshiping Lord Vishnu who sleeps on Sheshnag on the day of Ashwini Shukla Ekadashi.

Hindu devotees observe a strict fast or silent fast on Papankusha day. The person observing this fast should wake up early in the morning and after taking a bath, wear clean clothes. The fasting rituals of Papankusha Ekadashi start on the 10th day, ‘Dashami’. On this day, one ‘Satvik’ meal is eaten before sunset and the fast continues till the end of Ekadashi. While observing the fast, devotees should not lie or do any sinful act. Papankusha Ekadashi fast ends on ‘Dwadashi’ (12th day). Devotees should offer food and some kind of donation to a Brahmin before breaking the fast.
The person observing this fast should not sleep at all during the day and night. They spend their time reciting and singing Vedic mantras and hymns in praise of Lord Vishnu. Reciting ‘Vishnu Sahasranama’ is also considered very lucky.
On the day of Papankusha Ekadashi, Lord Vishnu is worshiped according to ‘Archana Vidhi’. On this day, the form of Lord Vishnu seated on ‘Garur’ is worshiped with utmost devotion. The ‘Padmanabha’ form of Shri Hari is worshiped with flowers, betel leaves, lamps, and incense sticks. At the end of the puja ritual, Aarti is performed.
Doing charity and charity on the day of Papankusha Ekadashi also gives great results. If a person cannot keep the fast, he can donate clothes, food, and other necessary things to the Brahmins and attain the same virtue. Some people also organize a ‘Brahmin feast’ on the day of Papankusha Ekadashi. It is believed that those who donate on the day of Papankusha Ekadashi never reach hell, the abode of Lord Yamraj, after death.
According to the Puranas, fasting on Papankusha Ekadashi gives results equivalent to performing a Surya Yagya. By observing this fast regularly, one gets freedom from the sins of three generations, attains salvation and the evil effects of the moon can be prevented. As a result of observing this fast, auspicious fruits start raining. Man does not have to suffer the sorrows of Yamalok, he gets a place at the feet of Shri Hari in Vaikuntha Dham. The virtuous benefit of this fast takes the fasting person’s maternal and ten ancestors from his paternal side from Yamlok to Vaikuntha Dham. Papankusha Ekadashi fast protects from sinful deeds. On this day, one should bathe in holy rivers and donate as per one’s capacity. On this day, worship should be done with reverence and devotion, and donations and Dakshina should be given to Brahmins. This keeps the body healthy and the mind cheerful.
In ancient times, there lived a cruel fowler named Krodhan in the Vindhya Mountains. He was spending his entire life doing bad deeds like violence, drinking, lying, plundering, and deceit. As the last days approached, he started seeing Yamdoots, due to which he understood that his end was near. The cruel fowler reached the ashram of Maharishi Angira in a state of fear of death and started pleading for mercy from him. Maharishi Angira took pity on the fowler and ordered him to fast on Papankusha Ekadashi. Fowler observed the fast of this Ekadashi with full devotion. Due to this, all the sins of the fowler were destroyed and by the grace of God, he attained salvation.
Papankusha Ekadashi fast is going to destroy the sins with the virtuous arrow the size of an elephant. On this day, people worship Lord Vishnu and perform bhajans and kirtans to make themselves pure and holy. This Ekadashi fast brings good nature and virtues to humans.
