Once upon a time in ancient times, the demon Tripura performed severe penance in Prayagraj for one lakh years. Due to the effect of his penance, all the inanimate beings, animals, and gods became frightened. The gods sent nymphs to break the penance but they could not succeed. Pleased with the penance of demon Tripura, Lord Brahma himself appeared before him and asked for a boon.

Tripura asked for a boon that “I should neither die at the hands of gods nor the hands of humans.” On the strength of this boon, Tripura became fearless and started committing atrocities.
