Once Indra, the king of the gods, was enjoying the Nandanvan garden with the divine Apsaras and Gandharvas, the divine singers. These included Pushpadanta, his daughter Pushpavati, Chitrasen, his wife Malini, his son Pushpavan and his son Malyavan. Pushpavati, a Gandharva girl, fell in love with Malyavan and shot a love arrow at him. She mesmerized him with her nature and charm. He started singing to woo Indra, but he became the third generation due to his love that he started singing without tune and lyrics. Indra saw his love and felt insulted. He cursed them to become male and female ghosts in the world and suffer for their sins.

He became very sad and went to the Himalayas, where he started living in sorrow. He had no sense of smell, taste, or touch. They were suffering from extreme cold and hunger. He was not sleeping at all. One day, the ghost asked his wife what sins she had committed in her previous lives to deserve such a terrible fate. He said that they should not sin anymore. He thought like this and spent his days like this.

By divine will, he got Jaya Ekadashi, which falls in the Shukla Paksha of Magha month. That day he did not eat anything and did good deeds. They ate only fruits and flowers and sat under a Peepal tree in the evening. Suryadev was happening. It was a very searching night. They sat on the throne across from each other and lay down like the most merciful. That night he could not sleep.

On the next morning of Jaya Ekadashi’s fast and Bhagwat Katha, he was freed from the ghost. They regained the form of beautiful Gandharvas and Apsaras and adorned themselves with fine clothes and jewelry. He went to heaven and saluted Indra.
