Ashadha Amavasya Story

By fasting on the day of Ashadha Amavasya, all sins are destroyed. This fast will provide happiness in this world and salvation in the next world. The story related to Ashadha Amavasya is described as follows.

A king named Kuber lived in a city named Alkapuri of Swargadham. He was a great devotee of Shiva. He worshiped Lord Shiva every day. A gardener named Hem used to bring flowers to the king’s house every day for worship. Hem the gardener had a beautiful wife. Whose name was Vishalakshi. One day the gardener brought flowers from Manasarovar but started joking with his wife. The king waited for the gardener till noon. King Kubera ordered his servants to find out the reason for the gardener’s absence as he had not yet brought the flowers. The soldiers said that the king’s gardener was a very wicked and sinful person.

He is joking with his wife. Hearing this, the king became very angry at the gardener and called the gardener. Hem the gardener appeared before the king trembling with fear. King Kuber got angry and scolded the gardener and said that he had insulted the most revered Lord Shiva. Therefore, he will suffer the separation from his wife and will go to the mortal world and become a leper. Hem Mali fell from heaven due to the curse of King Kuber. He fell on the earth at that very moment. 

As soon as he came to earth, his body became filled with itching. At that very moment, Hem Mali’s wife disappeared. The gardener suffered a lot after coming to earth. He kept wandering in the forest without food and water. Hem Mali could not sleep at night, but due to the influence of worshiping Lord Shiva, he became aware of the memory of his previous birth. One day, while roaming around, the gardener reaches the ashram of sage Markandeya. He saw that he was much older than Rishi Brahma and the ashram looked like Brahma’s assembly. Hem Mali went there and fell at the feet of the sage. Seeing this the sage asked what sin he had committed. Due to this, he has got this condition. Hem Mali told the whole situation to the sage. The sage said that he would have to fast, which would bring him salvation.

The sage said that if he observes the fast of Yogini Ekadashi of Krishna Paksha of Ashadha month as per the method then all his sins will be destroyed. The gardener was very happy to hear this. He bowed to the sage. After this, Hem Mali broke the fast ritually. Due to the effect of this fast, the gardener returned to his old form and started living happily with his wife. By observing this fast all sins are removed.
