According to the Hindu calendar, Chaitra Navratri starts from the Pratipada date of Shukla Paksha of Chaitra month and the first day of Navratri is dedicated to Maa Shailputri. A half moon is adorned on the forehead of Maa Shailputri and it is believed that worshiping her removes the lunar defect present in a person’s horoscope. On the first day of Navratri, the puja begins with the installation of the Kalash and ends after the recitation of Durga Chalisa. The story of Mother Shailputri must be read on this day. With this the Mother Goddess becomes pleased and bestows her blessings on the devotees.
To destroy all the troubles and negative powers of life, put cloves, betel nut and sugar candy on betel leaf and offer it to Maa Shailputri. By worshiping Maa Shailputri, one gets the desired results and girls get the best groom. During the puja on the first day of Navratri, devotees concentrate their mind on the Mooladhara Chakra. By worshiping Shailputri, the Muladhar Chakra is awakened and many achievements are achieved. By worshiping Mother Shailputri one attains health and gets freedom from diseases.
There is a tradition of worshiping Goddess Shailputri on the first day of Chaitra Navratri. According to religious beliefs, Mata Shailputri is considered to be the daughter of mountain king Himalaya. It is mentioned in the scriptures that the devotee should establish the Kalash in an auspicious time and then worship Maa Durga. After doing this, worship Mata Shailputri with Vedic mantras. At the time of worship, offer cow ghee to Goddess Shailputri. Also keep in mind that during the worship of Mata Shailputri, the devotee should wear only pink, red, or orange colored clothes.
Another name of Mother Shailputri is Sati. Once when Prajapati Daksh decided to perform a Yagya, he sent invitations to all the Gods and Goddesses but did not send the invitation to Lord Shiva. Goddess Sati was hopeful that she would also get the invitation but she became sad when the invitation did not come. She wanted to go to her father’s yagya but Lord Shiva flatly refused her. He said that when no invitation has come then it is not appropriate to go there. But due to Sati’s repeated requests, Shiva also had to give permission.
Sati felt insulted after reaching the yagya of Prajapati Daksh. Everyone turned their backs on him. Only his mother hugged him affectionately. His sisters were making fun of him and also insulting Bholenath. Prajapati Daksh himself was insulting Mother Sati. Unable to bear this insult, Sati sacrificed her life by jumping into the fire.
As soon as Lord Shiva came to know about this, he became angry and destroyed the entire yagya. After this Sati was born as Parvati in the Himalayas. Where she was named Shailputri. It is said that Mother Shailputri resides in Varanasi, the city of Kashi.
