Annaprashan Muhurat 2024

October 9, 2023

The birth of a child is one of the most beautiful and important aspects of a couple’s life. A baby’s first laugh, first step, or first word is always special. Offering food to the baby for the first time after birth, other than the mother’s milk is an important event in Hinduism, commonly known as Annaprashan. Annaprashan Sanskar is one of the 16 important rituals mentioned in Hindu scriptures. This Sanskara emphasizes the importance of ensuring good health and proper nutrition for the child.

What is Annaprashan Sanskar?

Annaprashan ceremony is celebrated for the first meal of the child after weaning from the mother. As per the Hindu culture, tradition, and customs, all kinds of food items are given to the child in the Annaprashan ceremony. After which the elders and parents bless the child.

Annaprashan Muhurat is usually celebrated when the child turns five to twelve months old. Wherein Annaprasan for girl children is usually done in odd months. When the child is in its fifth, seventh, ninth, or eleventh month. And for boys, Annaprasan is done in even months. When the child is in its sixth, eighth, tenth, or twelfth month. Annaprashan literally means “eating ripe rice” and is usually celebrated when the child turns six months old. While it is mainly performed within the confines of the home, many people celebrate it in temples as well.

What is the Annaprashan Method?

The Annaprashan ceremony begins with the child being seated on the maternal uncle’s lap. Then, the maternal uncle feeds the baby its first mouthful of solid food. Then, with the help of a pundit, a yagya or havan is conducted. After the havan, offerings are made to the deities and the child.

After this, a fun ritual is followed, where ornaments, pens, books, clay, and eatables are placed in front of the child.

Let’s find out what is the symbol behind these objects:

  • If the child chooses gold ornaments, it means they will attract wealth.

  • If the child puts his hand on the pen, he will be intelligent.

  • If the child chooses the book, it means they will be knowledgeable.

  • If the children choose clay, they will be blessed with wealth.

  • Finally, if the child chooses food they will be charitable and altruistic.
